Semi-green teas and oolongs are considered to be half way between a green tea and a black tea. The result is a beverage with a noticeably stronger flavour than green tea, but still smoother and somewhat milder than black tea. The colour is much darker than green tea, but is more reddish than the coppery colour that is associated with black teas. The caffeine content increases, as well, to be about half way between a green and a black tea.
All oolong teas fall under the general classification of semi-green teas, but not all semi-green teas are oolongs.
Non-oolong semi-green teas are currently produced only in China, primarily along the Western border of Fujian province and in Yunnan. Oolong teas are produced in both China and Taiwan. Taiwan (also known as Formosa) has been cultivating oolong teas since the 19th century.
